Postcard from Panarea

For our final postcard of the summer, Nettement Chic sets sail for the Italian island of Panarea. Anne-Sophie Mignaux, founder of super chic jewellery e-store Caratime, takes us on a tour of the jewel of the Tyrrhenian sea. Winding streets, divine seafood and turquoise waters are the order of the day. NC: What are your tips for a nettement chic day in Panarea?

Anne-Sophie: Start the day with breakfast and people watching at the port. After a seriously strong Sicilian espresso and a "cornetto" (croissant in italian), it's time to head for the sea. The island is totally volcanic which means no sandy beaches. But the water is fabulous and a day on a boat visiting the surrounding coves is a must. Don't miss the volcano of Stromboli which sits opposite Panarea.

Lunch in one of the many trattoria around the island is a perfect way to take a break from the sun. Beware, the spaghetti alle vongole can quickly become an addiction!

If you do head off to discover the island's interior you will be on foot or in an electric mini-moke as there are no cars on Panarea.

For dinner I adore Da Pina. Don't miss the gnocchis with courgettes and the spaghetti ai frutti di mare…

A postcard from Lombok

Nettement Chic's fourth and penultimate summer postcard comes to you from the far flung shores of Lombok in Indonesia. Lucas, co-founder of one of our all time favourite e-stores Cuisse de Grenouille, takes us on a tour of the island, accompanied by his brother and co-founder Séverin.

Nettement Chic (NC): Why Lombok and since when?
Lucas : In all honesty I was going to write about Brittany, where I have spent pretty much all my holidays since childhood. But despite absolutely loving the north-east coast of France, I have started to realise that the weather is a bit of an issue… There is even an expression in french that says that in Brittany it only rains on fools and I am starting to think that either I am a total fool or that the maxim is untrue! Either way, this summer I decided to avoid the daily downpour in favour of a rather more exotic destination: Lombok in Indonesia.

NC: What are your tips for a nettement chic day in Lombok?
Lucas: For me a good night is the first step on the road to a good day, hence the importance of finding the right hotel. I loved the Surfer Inn which is right at the entrance to Kuta Lombok. There is a pool (a rare find in the region), a superb restaurant and importantly, air-conditioned rooms.

The next challenge is to find a way to get around. For me the moped is the mode of transport of choice and opens up numerous possible destinations on the island. If you like to surf, head to the little village of Gerupuk where the charming fisherman can be persuaded to take you by boat to the best waves.

Strenuous activity deserves to be followed by a massage and the Sofitel is the place to go (at 20 euros you would be mad not to!). End the day with supper at the fabulous vegetarian restaurant Ashtari, high above Kuta Lombok.

NC: What is the indispensable item of clothing for a day on the beach in Lombok?
Lucas: It has to be a pair of board-shorts from Cuisse de Grenouille! We have named one pair after Gerupuk in honour of the perfect waves.

Pour sa quatrième carte postale de l'été, Nettement Chic met le cap vers l'Indonésie. Lucas, fondateur de notre e-boutique partenaire Cuisse de Grenouille, partage avec nous son amour pour Lombok qu'il a eu la chance de découvrir avec son frère. Destination exotique pour une carte postale qui devait, au départ, mettre à l'honneur la Bretagne ! Jugez plutôt...

Nettement Chic (NC) : Pourquoi Lombok et depuis quand ?
Lucas : En août, pour la plupart d’entre nous (les plus chanceux en tout cas) c’est enfin les vacances bien méritées après un dur labeur. C’est le moment d’enfin souffler, de profiter de la chaleur et du beau temps. Encore faut-il qu’il soit de la partie !

Et oui, malgré toute l’affection que j’ai pour la Bretagne où je passe mes vacances depuis ma plus tendre enfance, je dois reconnaître que ce n’est décidément pas une valeur sûre, à tel point que le dicton « En Bretagne, il ne pleut que sur les cons » est devenu franchement vexant. Soit je suis devenu con, soit c’est complètement faux ! Peut-être un peu les deux me dira-t-on…

En bref, Carnac dispose d’un micro-climat, les jolies plages sont au rendez-vous, les crêpes à l’andouille aussi mais pour aller boire un verre en soirée à la Baignoire de Joséphine, une veste de quart est de rigueur car évidemment il flotte !

C’est pourquoi je voudrais vous parler d’une destination toute autre, nettement plus exotique où j’ai eu la chance de séjourner deux semaines en compagnie de mon frère Séverin. Et pour être franc, je n’en suis jamais tout à fait revenu, car la simple évocation de cet endroit me laisse rêveur : Lombok en Indonésie. Là-bas, il fait chaud. La simplicité, l’esprit décontracté sont les maîtres mots : la plage, les petits hôtels pleins de charmes, les superbes spots de surfs, les vagues parfaites… autant de raisons de vouloir y retourner à peine embarqué dans le vol du retour.

NC : Quelles sont vos recommandations pour une journée nettement chic à Lombok ?
Lucas : Qui dit passer une bonne journée, dit également passer une bonne soirée et donc trouver avoir un bon endroit où loger. L’idéal est donc l’hôtel Surfer Inn situé à l’entrée de Kuta Lombok. L’hôtel dispose ainsi d’une piscine (privilège rare dans le coin) d’un restaurant (superbe malgré une attente un peu longue) et de chambres climatisées et propres.

Deuxième étape, trouver un bon moyen pour se déplacer. N’hésitez pas, le plus pratique reste de louer un scooter. Ensuite évidemment, la ville vous offre de nombreux programmes alléchants...

Allez surfer : direction le petit village de Gerupuk où de sympathiques pêcheurs se feront un plaisir de vous accompagner en bateau au spot en question.

Détendez-vous avec un massage au Sofitel (pour la modique somme de 20 euros).
Profitez d’un superbe déjeuner d’altitude chez Ashtari : situé sur les hauteurs de Kuta Lombok, ce restaurant fin sert une cuisine végétarienne qui saura ravir les palais les plus raffinés.

NC : Quel est l'article indispensable pour parfaitement se fondre dans le décor de Lombok ?
Lucas : Pour vous fondre dans le décor, rien de tel qu’un de nos board-shorts Cuisse de Grenouille, évidemment, article indispensable dans votre valise. L’un de nos maillots doit d’ailleurs son nom au spot de surf Gerupuk dont nous gardons d’excellents souvenirs de glisse.

A postcard from Corsica

For the third in our series of summer postcards, Nettement Chic sets sail for the gloriously clear waters of Corsica, otherwise known as "l'Ile de Beauté." Bea, founder of uber-cool accessories e-store ByBea shares her tips for a super chic stay on the island.

Nettement Chic (NC) : Why Corsica and since when?
Bea : We have spent the past two summers on the island with my family. It is the perfect place if you favour a peaceful and wildly beautiful holiday destination.

NC : What are your tips for a nettement chic day in Corsica?
Bea : When I can go to the market in the early morning I know I am really on holiday. Bonifacio market is excellent and the views from the clifftops are spectacular.

Next stop lunch on the beach at Tamaricciu or Maora for the fabulous fish.

My favourite place for drinks in the evening is the port at Bonifacio followed by supper at the yacht club (le restaurant du centre nautique) watching  the boats come in. And I never can resist a last drink at the B'52!

NC : What is the indispensable item of clothing for a day on the beach in Corsica?
Bea : The Cuba Libre in metallic green. For me it's the perfect bag for the beach and for evening.

Bea : Cela fait deux ans que nous allons en Corse avec ma famille. Nous voulions trouver un endroit plus calme et sauvage que la Côté d'Azur.

NC : Quelles sont vos recommandations pour une journée nettement chic en Corse ?
Bea : Tout ce que j'aime le matin c'est faire le marché, là je sais que je suis en vacances ! Celui de Bonifacio est top et on peut en profiter pour se balader dans les hauteurs de la ville.

Puis, rien de tel qu'un déjeuner sur la plage au Tamaricciu pour une bonne pizza ou au Maora Beach pour ses poissons.

Apéro sur le port et dîner au restaurant du centre nautique avec vue sur les bateaux. On ne rentre pas avant un dernier verre au B'52 !

NC : Quel est l'article indispensable pour parfaitement se fondre dans le décor corse ?
Bea : Le sac Cuba Libre aussi bien pour la plage que le soir !

A postcard from Tunisia

For the second in our series of summer postcards, Nettement Chic is bound for Tunisia in the delightful company of Febronie, founder of the beautiful e-shop of the same name. Her products are made and sourced in Tunisia and she visits at least twice a year.

Nettement Chic (NC): Why Tunisia and since when?

Febronie : My parents have lived in Hammamet in Tunisia for the past 8 years. I started coming here to see them for holidays and now I also come to source and make new products and see my suppliers. I absolutely adore it. The Tunisians are delightful and want the best for their country. The revolution has given them increased freedom and I hope that the road to democracy will be a calm one.

NC: What are your tips for a nettement chic day in Hammamet?

Febronie : Start the day with a walk on the beach, then lose yourself amongst the blue and white houses in the Medina and head for the central market to buy fabulous spices and vegetables.

For lunch I recommend the pool house at the Sindbad, the chic-est hotel in Hammamet. The pizza with tuna and the spaghetti with grouper are amazing. And the hotel's shop, owned by Samira, is one of the best places to buy Tunisian products (Febronie's baskets, foutas and scarves are sold there.). The restaurant on the beach is also a favourite lunch spot, not least for its fabulous views of the Medina.

I would also recommend spending a day visiting the Gulf of Tunis and in particular La Marsa and Sidi Bou Said, which is not unlike Taormina in Sicily. The Le Golfe restaurant in La Marsa is just magical.

NC: What is the indispensable item of clothing for a day on the beach in Tunisia?

Febronie : A fouta from Febronie for lunch at the pool house. And a panama to keep the sun at bay.

Cet été, Nettement Chic vous emmène en voyage. Deuxième étape de ce tour du monde : la Tunisie. Grâce à Febronie, fondatrice de l’e-boutique éponyme, nous partons cette semaine à Hammamet et dans ses environs. S’y rendant très régulièrement pour le plaisir mais aussi pour le travail, Febronie nous parle de ses coups de cœur et bonnes adresses. De quoi avoir la nettement chic attitude tunisienne !

Nettement Chic (NC) : Pourquoi la Tunisie et depuis quand ?
Febronie : Mes parents habitent Hammamet en Tunisie depuis 8 ans. J'ai commencé à y venir en vacances et maintenant essentiellement pour rencontrer mes fournisseurs et développer mes collections. Je viens 1 à 2 fois par an.
J'adore ce pays. Les Tunisiens sont très gentils et veulent le mieux pour le pays. La révolution a permis une plus grande liberté de parole. Espérons que la démocratie arrive à faire son chemin.

NC : Quelles sont vos recommandations pour une journée nettement chic en Tunisie ?
Febronie : Se promener le long de la plage le matin, se perdre dans les petites rues de la Medina aux maisons blanches et bleues et aller acheter ses épices et légumes au marché central.

Le midi : déjeuner au pool house du Sindbad, l'hôtel nettement chic d'Hammamet. La pizza au thon et les pâtes au mérou sont un must. La vue plongeante sur la baie d'Hammamet est sublime. La boutique de l'hôtel, tenue par Samira, est l'endroit où dénicher de beaux produits tunisiens (les paniers de plage, foutas et haik de ma collection y sont vendus). Le restaurant de la plage est mon autre adresse préférée où l’on peut déjeuner les pieds dans le sable tout en admirant les remparts de la Medina.

Passer une journée sur le Golfe de Tunis est aussi très agréable. Je recommande bien sûr La Marsa pour la douceur de vivre qui s’en dégage et bien sur Sidi Bousaid, le Taormina Tunisien ! Le restaurant du Golfe à la Marsa est magique.

NC : Quel est l'article indispensable pour parfaitement se fondre dans le décor tunisien ?
Febronie : Un fouta Febronie pour bruncher au pool house. Et un panama pour se protéger du soleil tout en restant chic.

A postcard from the Côte d'Azur

For the next five weeks, Nettement Chic invites you to join us on a magical (virtual) summer holiday courtesy of a selection of our favourite e-shops. Destination number one: the Côte d'Azur with Carine Pastor, founder of The Astor.

Nettement Chic (NC): Why the Côte d’Azur and since when?
Carine Pastor (CP): I lived in Cannes between the ages of 5 and 18 and then in Nice where I was a law student for 5 years. Every summer I go back for a real family holiday with my friends and their children as most of our parents are still there. And when you know the Côte d'Azur well, you don't even notice the bling bling side of it. It's just a fantastic place for a holiday. 

NC : What are your tips for a nettement chic day on the Côte d’Azur ?
CP : In the morning first thing I head to the rue d'Antibes in Cannes for some shopping while it's still quiet. I always go to Taizo for perfume and to Loup 47 for shoes.

Next stop, the beach. I have two favourites: the Garoupe beaches at Cap d'Antibes which still have an untouched beauty and perfectly clear water. Or for a more family feel, Bijou Plage in Cannes where we have been going forever with parents, children and grandparents. You have to try the local speciality, a "Pan Bagnat" made by Giselle at her kiosk on the beach!

And at the end of the day we head to the terrace of the Belles Rives hotel in Juan Les Pins for an apéritif. I am a big fan of the art deco architecture of this hotel where I got married last year. 

Then for dinner, don't miss Mamo au Michelangelo in Antibes old town. Mamo is a Côte d'Azur nightlife legend and his Rigatoni Polpetta washed down with Domaine Ott Rosé are to die for! 

NC : What is the essential Côte d'Azur item of clothing?  

CP : One is not enough! My essentials would be : 
- The Astor beach bag, which I can't live without on holiday
- The Hawaï dress by Masscob for perfect Cannes chic
- A pair of Princess Maïa sandals by Patricia blanchet for a touch of bling!

Cet été, Nettement Chic vous emmène en voyage. Première étape : la Côte d'Azur. Loin des clichés, c'est en compagnie de Carine Pastor, fondatrice de The Astor, que nous vous invitons à découvrir cette région. Ayant vécu de nombreuses années là-bas, Carine aime y revenir et partage aujourd'hui avec nous ses coups de coeur et bonnes adresses afin d'être nettement chic sur la côte !

Nettement Chic (NC) : Pourquoi la Côte d’Azur et depuis quand ?
Carine Pastor (CP) : Destination très clichée... J'ai habité à Cannes de 5 à 18 ans puis à Nice pour mes études de droit pendant 5 ans. Chaque été, toutes les copines se retrouvent là bas en famille, avec les enfants, car nos parents y habitent toujours. Je ne fais d'ailleurs plus du tout attention aux strass et paillettes ou alors je m'en amuse complètement!

NC : Quelles sont vos recommandations pour une journée nettement chic sur La Côte d’Azur ?
CP : Le matin, à la "fraîche", c'est balade shopping rue d'Antibes à Cannes. Tour obligatoire à la parfumerie Taizo et chez Loup 47.

Ensuite direction la Plage. Deux options : les plages de la Garoupe au Cap d'Antibes, qui conservent un côté sauvage et où l'eau est toujours transparente ! Sinon plus familiale, Bijou Plage à Cannes où l'on se retrouve tous les matins avec les enfants, les parents, les grand parents, depuis des générations et où l'on déguste un excellent Pan Bagnat préparé par Giselle au kiosque !

Apéro sur la terrasse de l'hôtel Belles Rives à Juan Les Pins ; je suis fan de l'architecture art déco de cet hôtel où je me suis mariée l'an dernier.

Restaurant : chez Mamo au Michelangelo (Vieil Antibes), pour le boss Mamo qui est un personnage de la vie nocturne et pour les Rigatoni Polpetta (Saucisse Perrugine, boulette de viande, tomates, huile d'olive, basilic, ail) que je m'avale accompagnées d'un Domaine Ott Rosé ! Y manger est toujours un spectacle avec un défilé de jolies filles...

NC : Quel est l'article indispensable pour parfaitement se fondre dans le décor ? 
CP : Il en y a plusieurs :
- Le sac de plage The Astor, un indispensable pour les vacances
- La robe hawaï Masscob pour se fondre dans le décor Croisette
- Les sandales princesse Maïa Patricia blanchet pour leur côté bling bling
